Interferomertic Swathe

Survey of Shipyard

The Company

AquaticSonar Swathe Surveyor is designed and manufactured by Kemijoki AquaticTechnology Oy, KAT, a wholly owned subsidiary of Kemijoki Oy, one of Finland's leading experts in the hydroelectric power industry. Kemijoki Arctic Technology (KAT) was established in 1998 to supply specialist products, including the AquaticSonar Swathe Surveyor, developed at the R&D centre of Kemijoki Oy to the commercial market.

The Product

Tilting transducers mounted on bow of the vessel

The AquaticSonar “Swathe Surveyor” has been designed by surveyors for surveyors to provide a highly accurate but portable bathymetric sonar system for shallow water applications. The system works using the interferometric technique of measuring phase differences to determine ranges to target. The system also allows for real-time display of bottom map and amplitude signals as sidescan sonar records. The hardware makes use of the latest digital data transfer technology and encompasses unique features enabling the Swathe Surveyor system to be reduced to the smallest size possible.

The basic system comprises of the transducer arrays (two side-looking transducers and one downward looking transducer for centre line measurements), a deployment Laptop for data aqcuisitionframe and a laptop. There is no cumbersome electronics transceiver box as the associated electronics are integrated within the compact transducer housings, which communicate digitally with the Laptop via a Firewire link. With no onboard transceiver the Swathe Surveyor is the most compact Swathe Bathymetry system on the market today. Additional sensors such as RTK-DGPS, motion sensors and a heading reference device can also be interfaced.

One of the Swathe Surveyors innovative design features makes it more versatile than any other system on the market today. With the Swathe Surveyor’s Mounting frame and transducersspecially designed deployment frame it is possible to vary the angle of the transducers by remote control without affecting the calibration of the system. This angleSystem transit cases is logged in the computer and is used when processing the sonar information. The benefit of this facility is optimization of the data quality and coverage especially on steep slopes as may be found in canals and dams or on gentle slopes as found in shallow water areas close to river banks and shorelines.

This system has many advantages over other systems on the market today, including;

  • Generation of up to 10 times the data density of multibeam systems
  • Firewire digital communcations
  • Ability to tilt transduder array
  • No cumbersome in-board transceiver
  • Surveys at up to 14 km/h
  • 12 Volt d.c. operation

These features make the the Swathe Surveyor the most compact swathe system on the market today. To download a copy of the brochure or a report on our 2005 demos in the U.K click here.
